Style and Soul

Rugs

Rugs are a great way to “Zone” a space.

They can also make a glam style statement, be warm and cosy underfoot and add texture, colour or pattern.

To use a rug effectively, work out how much space you need for your sofa and chairs, then buy a rug that sits fully under all of the furniture in that area.
This will “ground” your living area and make for a conversational space.
To avoid looking awkward, your rug should be at least a foot wider than your sofa on either side.

The amount of space in your dining room must be considered if you are thinking of adding a rug under the table
For the room to look balanced, it is necessary for the rug to extend past the chairs.

In large open plan areas – the rug does the job of the walls, marking out an area.
By laying the rug on the floor you will immediately demarcate that zone, hence you may use more than one rug
A room divider can also achieve this in open plan spaces.

How to choose a rug.

If your primary furniture, such as a sofa, is a solid colour, then consider selecting a patterned rug
eg. Floral, stripe, squiggle, geometric or textures that are self patterned.
Match the secondary colour in a patterned rug to your sofa
Match the third rug colour to your cushions, drapes, wall colour or other accents in the room, for a co-hesive look.

Rugs come in so many shapes and sizes, textures and patterns. They are made from diverse materials including Wool, Jute, Bamboo, Polyester and Cotton.
It is important that you choose the right material, shape etc for your home taking in to account things like, is it in a high sun situation?
Is it washable? Practical for kids and pets?
Is it going in to a bedroom, hallway, formal or informal space.
