Styling with Cushions and Throws

Gone are the days where cushions and throws are just used for warmth and comfort. The trend has been set, and we are now seeing more and more styling put in to practice when it comes to these two cosy items in our household. Are you after some practicality as well as style when it comes to your cushions and throws at home? Look no further, as we delve in to a few of the most popular ways to do this in some of your favourite areas of the house.

The Bedroom

When you think about it, this is the room that we spend most of our time in, so it’s only natural that we want to make it as comfortable but practical as possible right? Hands up who has more than the standard 2 pillows on the bed? There is definitely something about having some extra decorative pillows on the bed, then aimlessly throwing them off every night. To add some flare to your bed, add some decorative cushions that vary in texture and sizes.

Don’t be afraid to have a good play around and remember to ‘chop’! This is where you make a nice, natural dent in the middle of those luxurious cushions for a more professional finish.

To add some extra texture and warmth, lay a warm throw over the bottom of the bed. Throws of different materials such as wool are perfect as an added layer for the colder nights, plus they look extra stylish during the day.

The Lounge

This is a place in your home where a lot of life happens, where we enjoy cosying up on the couch and where guests are entertained. Depending on the furniture you have in this room, there are plenty of ways to style it with cushions and throws.

For example, if you have a single chair in your lounge, this would be the perfect place for a decorative yet comfortable cushion with lots of colour and warmth. Add a casual throw that is draped over top of the chair – it will invite anyone to hunker down with a good book.

Do you have a daybed, ottoman or a large lounge suite? Keep a throw handy at the foot of each for those colder days and nights to keep your toes extra warm. Having some extra throws for the family in a basket nearby is also a great idea, as well as an added statement piece for the room.

Outdoors Area

If you have an outdoor area with some seating, then you have another opportunity to be in cushion and throw heaven! You will have unlimited choices with textures, colours and patterns for your outdoor cushions and throws. Make it as inviting as possible by ensuring it is practical as well as comfortable. You will be likely using your outdoor area mostly in summer, so think of bold and bright colours with some textured accents to add interest. For the colder evenings, add a throw for an extra layer of warmth. Even an outdoor rug underneath the furniture will make all of the difference. Make sure you care for your outdoor cushions and throws by keeping them inside at night once the entertaining outside is over!

Outdoor Palm Print Cushion

When it comes to styling with cushions and throws, there is no one right way to do it. Choose colours and textures that make you happy and that fit in with the rest of your aesthetics throughout your house. Add some trims and tassels to your cushions and throws for extra depth.

Choose a variety of styles and sizes. Flanged, self piped, contrast piped or fringed for something different. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. You might surprise yourself!
